CHAPTER 14

Misty

My guests were far more solemn when they returned from the slopes Tuesday evening than they had been the night before. Most went straight to their rooms, including Sebastian. I was glad he didn’t choose to fill the great room with his range of rank body odors again.

My sons and Pebble watched a movie in their room before calling it a night at ten o’clock. All of them had to get up early for work tomorrow. Welcome to adulthood.

I checked the local weather forecast on my phone before turning off my light. Temperatures were expected to plummet overnight, with high winds and heavy snowfall. Near-blizzard conditions would continue into the morning. My guests and I were likely to be snowbound tomorrow. Sighing, I returned my phone to my night table, turned off the light, and settled in.

Even with Yeti’s warm, comforting body curled up against me, I slept fitfully. A tap-tap-tap sounded in my dreams, like the finger of Nigel Goodwin’s ghost tapping on my window. I woke to realize the sound was real. Tossing back the covers, I went to the window and opened the interior shutters to discover the brisk wind rattling a sled that had been haphazardly leaned against the outside wall. Lest the noise bother my guests across the hall, too, I felt around my floor for my snow boots, slid my feet into them, and ambled out of my room. I’d only be outside for a matter of seconds, so I hadn’t bothered with my coat. Big mistake. I exited the lodge through the exterior door at the end of the hall, still in my nightgown and still half-asleep. A gust of frigid wind blew straight up my gown, raising it to my waist. Yikes! My eyes popped wide and every orifice in my body puckered. If a blast of arctic air on bare skin wasn’t enough to instantly render someone fully awake, I didn’t know what was.

I pulled the sled away from the wall and lay it flat on the snow. The noise dealt with, I hurried back inside before my nether regions suffered frostbite. I climbed back into my warm bed and pulled Yeti up next to me. She stretched out a paw, yawned, and began to purr, the sound and sensation soothing me.
